Stephen Rotstein
Financial Planning Standard Board
Stephen has served in various senior leadership roles in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. He is currently working with the Financial Planning Standard Board, providing counsel on the organization’s strategic direction to advance the global financial planning profession through strategic partnerships, engagement with FPSB’s network of organizations, new territory development and regulatory matters. Previously, Stephen was the Director, Global and Domestic Affairs at the Ontario Securities Commission. As part of their Executive Management Team, he managed the OSC’s relationship to the Ontario Minister of Finance, and coordinated efforts with other federal, provincial, and international regulators on policy issues.
Stephen also served as the Vice-President, Policy & Regulatory Affairs & General Counsel at FP Canada where he oversaw all public policy and regulatory matters and played a key role in the introduction of financial planning regulation in Ontario and Saskatchewan. As FP Canada’s General Counsel, he managed the organization’s legal risks.
Stephen has extensive voluntary leadership experience. He was recently elected as a Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario and is the Chair of In House Counsel Worldwide. He previously served as President of the Canadian Bar Association, Canada’s largest legal association representing more than 37,000 lawyers and judges. Stephen has also served as Chair of the Credit Counselling Society, Chair of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA) and Chair of the Four Village Community Health Centre.
Stephen holds a BA in political science and history from the University of Western Ontario and was awarded an LL.B. by Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. He is a member of the Bar in Ontario and New York State and holds the Certified In-House Counsel - Canada certification (CIC.C) granted by the CCCA and the Rotman School of Management of the University of Toronto.
