Legal Technologist
Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes), one of Canada’s largest and most successful law firms, is looking for a Legal Technologist to work in the emerging legal technology field in the Toronto office.
Reporting to the Manager, Legal Technology, the Legal Technologist will apply their technical expertise to support the development and implementation of the suite of legal technology managed by the Practice Innovation team. The successful candidate will bring a passion for technology, data and process improvement to their work with a team dedicated to transforming how we provide services to our clients.
Primary responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Administering and managing several legal technologies used by the Firm, including Closing Folders, Contract Express, HighQ, Kira and other legal technologies, as required.
- Overseeing the implementation of a legal technology data strategy.
- Designing, developing and customizing data-driven Power BI reports to meet business requirements.
- Ensuring Power BI reports are visually appealing, user-friendly and provide actionable insights.
- Implementing data models and visualizations that effectively communicate key metrics and trends.
- Developing and customizing workflows in Power Automate to streamline business processes by automating repetitive tasks and integrating various applications and services.
- Staying abreast of the latest features, updates and enhancements in the Power Platform and providing recommendations for improvements and optimizations
- Applying Firm legal technology for certain use cases, such as creating client extranets and internal collaboration sites.
- Staying alert to new developments and trends in the legal market, with a focus on process improvement, technology and innovation.
- Supporting content management on the Firm’s intranet.
- Assisting in the development, maintenance and improvement of processes and other activities related to legal technology.
- Acting as a point of escalation for software and data-related issues and queries; liaising directly with vendors to resolve issues.
- Contributing to continuous software improvements through information sharing, recommending product improvements and training.
- Coordinating and managing enhancement requests with vendors.
- Actively engaging in Practice Innovation projects by working collaboratively with all Firm stakeholders to develop new solutions.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- University degree in a computer science, mathematics, technology or data science discipline or related field of study.
- Experience developing and designing data-driven Power BI reports is required.
- Experience developing workflows in Power Automate is required.
- Experience in a professional services or law firm environment is preferred.
- Experience building and customizing client collaboration portals in HighQ and working with other legal technology is an asset.
Skills/Abilities:
- High-technology proficiency (including advanced Excel, MS Word and other relevant software programs).
- Proficiency in creating and designing Power BI and Power Automate solutions to meet business requirements.
- Ability to define areas of improvement, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Strong analytical and conceptual skills and excellent problem-solving abilities are required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the proven ability to build relationships and work closely with business stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated team player, self-starter and independent thinker.
- Superior time management to efficiently multitask and prioritize competing demands.
- Extremely well organized with superb attention to detail.
- Ability to follow up on activities without delays and work autonomously.
- Strong work ethic and collaborative work approach.
