Technology SIG - Green Computing
Description
“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” - Albert Einstein
Data Centre infrastructures are in a crisis. New high-density servers provide more computing power with less power consumption than traditional servers, but with more servers installed per square foot due to increasing demand for IT solutions, data centre demand for energy actually increases. Add to that the increasing cooling requirements of equipment, and many data centres do not have the infrastructure to handle new IT equipment. Even if they do, energy costs are taking a greater share of IT budgets, limiting the ability to add equipment and expand capabilities. Improving efficiency may be the only way to control data centre costs while meeting business needs.
The presentation will illustrate strategies to help firms reduce energy consumption, ensure that their data centres and facilities support their current technology and business needs, and are capable of scaling to support business growth. The methods for energy consumption reduction are available today, are cost effective and may have the added benefit to the user of avoiding expensive capital costs, such as expansion or relocation. Another benefit of "Greening" of the data centre, is that the environment is more consistent, reducing thermal stress on IT gear.
